Another photography experiment: film photography with 70 years old camera Agfa Box 50. Now the children learn that basic photography only requires light, lens & chemical process.

Been living in digital era, the children want to see the result instantly "Let me see the picture! Let me see the picture!" Sorry kids, this is not iPhone. You have to wait the film to be finished spooling then bring it to film laboratory. Kids hate waiting. But once they see the result, they keep asking "Is this magic?"

Yes kids. This is kind of magic.

Polaroid Film

What's the point with this kind of photography?
Been living with digital photography for years, this kind of photography gives us interesting experiences. One real genuine hardcopy of the real moment. It's unpredictable, not mistake-proof, hard to replicate. You cannot copy or paste, you cannot manipulate, you cannot erase. You have to think twice before taking a photo, like asking to yourself "Is the moment worth the film?" "Is it going to be good?"

With this kind of photography, mistake is acceptable. Mistake is the new art. Mismatch color is the new color. And it's challenging, the film no longer widely manufactured by Polaroid. You need to get an expensive film from Impossible Project that contains only 8 exposures. Or you can get an expired Polaroid film, which can give you artistic result like this:


Kids created their first Polaroid photo by accidentally press the shutter button. The mistake worth $3 each.



When it's no longer mainstream, it might be considered an art. And for us it's not just an art. We want to introduce this kind of technology to our children, so we will not be the last generation who know about this old tech, Polaroid, a sustainable legacy.

Inspiration From Far Away

We live far away from our home town, where our children's grandparents live. We do regular online communications so we can share stories, pictures or videos. Sometimes, we do art sharing. Painting & drawing, like what Kong Soin - one of their grandpa - did in his artwork.

He drew a mother & his son in a traditional style. "This Dita (my wife) & Neo (our son) in a village." Then he showed his artwork to us here in Kuwait. Seems grandpa misses his grandson.

Pimp my shoes

I need to refresh my step. Gonna pimp my flat shoes. So I asked the fellow IGers, which one goes better with my blue shoes, the polka dots one or the flower one? I couldn't make up my mind because both fabrics are cute.

Then I tried to make ruffles from both fabrics. I wanted to see which one is the best. And when all was done, I could see clearly which one has made me fall in love.

When I used the floral pattern, I lost some details because the ruffles was too small.

The Ruffled Shoes

1. Cut out one 5x16 cm strip of fabric for each shoe.
2. Quadruple your thread to make it nice and sturdy, tying a knot at one end. If you happen to have a heavy-duty thread (such as linen thread), that would be great to use too.
3. Using approx. 3 mm stitches, stitch across the top of your strip, pulling slowly, but firmly, pushing the material downward, to creating gathering.



4. Once you’ve gathered to your satisfaction and length, knot your threads to secure. Repeat for each strip. Place them on your shoe, and stitch on. Don’t forget to use your thimble to push the needle through! Finish by rounding off the corners of your fabric strips with scissors, if desired.

Yes! the dotted one looks cuter and simple. A touch of vintage buttons made it even prettier.
