Drawing the London Trip

In our UK trip, we brought iPad for kids but we kept it in the bag for days & rarely using it. Wherever we went, kids brought their sketchbook & drawing kit.



We wanted them to experience more about the trip.
We wanted them record their trip into paper.
We wanted them to capture the moment more deeply.



By drawing, we were making memories, not just taking memories.

Kids are busy with their comic project. Done with their breakfast, they are opening their pencil case & start drawing & making story.

Leia's Project For Her Birthday

Next week is Leia's 6th birthday. She has an idea: draw 25 pictures of princess (including princesses from Indonesian folklore like Bawang Merah, Timun Mas, Chandra Kirana etc) and give them to her 25 friends in the class.

So far, she already done 16 pictures. Still few pictures to go. Go Leia Go!

Sketching with Old Psion PDA

Got this Psion Series 5 in flea market and we decided it to make a test: Sketching!

It's not bad at all! And the result is fantastic for a pre-2000 PDA. Much better than Newton MessagePad 130, not to mention how easy to retrieve the file from Psion to the modern desktop device like MacOS via CF card.
Try retrieve images from Newton to MacOS X, you will end up dealing with obselete serial cable, obselete software & obselete system (read: MacOS 8 or classic).

Weekend Without Mall

Winter in Kuwait is beautiful. Not too chilly, around 5ºC - 10ºC with sun still bright shine. Time to get out from the mall at the weekend! Time to doing some outdoor activities!

Drawing



Bring the snacks, cookies & drawing tools. We're enjoying the sunshine while drawing in Kuwait Tower park near the beach. Find a spot, unfold the mat and start drawing. Don't forget to drink your juice, kids!





Playground & Amusement Park

The public playgrounds in Kuwait are fantastic. Relatively in good maintenances. Kids always get crazy & having fun for hours.



This is in Marina Beach & the other right is in Applebee beach. Decent playground for kids to waste their time for free.



Or going to the amusement park. Enjoying the view from ferris wheel or rising a horse chariot. Yeehaa!

Instagram



We are planning to introduce the social network to our daughter bit by bit. And we think Instagram is a good start. She can learn about photography, how to take better picture & meets another user (under our authorization & control) from around the world.

Going outside is a perfect time for taking Instagram picture. Great colors, awesome objects & our daughter can learn how to composite a scene with her iPod touch.

Zoo



Another good place to take pictures is the zoo! Kids love the animals, take tons of photo with the iPod touch & bring it home "I HAVE DEER IN MY IPOD TOUCH!"

Those live creatures amaze our kids. They realized that there are another life forms living in this planet & deserve our attention.

Travelling by Bus

Public transportation in Kuwait is not bad. Still better compare to Jakarta, but no commuter train or subway.



Kids were excited doing the bus trips. Though they prefer subway like in Singapore or tram in Istanbul or any other European countries.

Museum



Well. This activity is a bit tricky. Kids have a little interest with musuem, depends on the object though. We bring them to Kuwait traditional sadu textile museum as part of family art & craft experience. Colorful yarns & hand loom machines get their interest "Can we make our own dress with these colorful yarns?" our daughter asks.

Book reading




Reading books in the park & enjoying shawarma. And of course, hot coffee sipping.

So, there are the ideas. Winter is another purpose to ditch the mall & enjoy alternative activities outside. Let's go!

Digital Sketchbook

I never leave home without this sketchbook & always bring it everywhere in my pocket. Waiting is no longer boring.

Inspiration From Far Away

We live far away from our home town, where our children's grandparents live. We do regular online communications so we can share stories, pictures or videos. Sometimes, we do art sharing. Painting & drawing, like what Kong Soin - one of their grandpa - did in his artwork.

He drew a mother & his son in a traditional style. "This Dita (my wife) & Neo (our son) in a village." Then he showed his artwork to us here in Kuwait. Seems grandpa misses his grandson.
We miss you, too! :')

SEVEN Day 7: Hawally amusement park

Saturday, we're going to the amusement park in Hawally by bus. This is the last day of the holiday, tomorrow Arwen & Leia have to go to school (work & school started at Sunday in Kuwait & other middle-eastern countries.)

SEVEN Day 6: Weekend Without Mall

Nice weather for outdoor activities. So we decide there'll be no mall this weekend. 

This afternoon we walk in Kuwait downtown. Buy Tintin comics, get some shawarmas then sit on sidewalk bench enjoying the cold breeze & city view.

SEVEN Day 5: Dinner at Mubarakeya

Dinner in old traditional Kuwait market: lamb chops, chicken tikka, kabous bread, hamous. But Neo prefers onion.

Winter means fashion. Leia knows that. And she got her new red boots for this winter.

SEVEN Day 3: Flowers

Arwen & Leia came to me and said "Dad, look we have flowers for you." Sweet! They sure know how to make their parents smile.

It's Eid holiday. Arwen spends the whole day on the beach playing with Instagram in the iPod touch. Capturing some photos of seagulls, seas, playground, trees & share them to the Instagram.
