We just started our family project: a watercolor journal for our 7 years in Kuwait. The whole family member will put their drawings & paintings, included our son's.
You can check our progress in Instagram with #7yearsinQ8 hashtag.
While we're in Jakarta, we don't have a proper & comfort studio to do some art & craft activities at home. So we think painting is one of the activities that doable outside with our children. Then we
start looking some nice & cool place, like coffee shop or cafe with big table, big window, good lighting. And we find some good place in Jakarta, like VIN+ in Pondok Indah Mall, LOT 9 in Bintaro sector 9, Yesterday Lounge in Pangeran Antasari, Trafique in Hang Tuah, Anomali Coffee in Menteng and Pipiltin Cocoa in Panglima Polim.
And we start to make the #cafepainter hashtag on Instagram and ask other people to join. Go get your portable painting tools, start painting in your favorite cafe and take the picture of the painting with the hashtag.

My 6 years old daughter painting with Windsor & Newton paints on aquarelle paper. While I'm painting on iPad with Nomadbrush, on Auryn Ink app, SketchBook Pro app & ArtRage app. Another dimension of painting!
Back in the college, watercolor painting was a sacred activity. It was a therapy, meditation, requires concentration & specific mood.
But now, is it possible for me to do it with 1 baby, 1 toddler & 1 kid around? Today, I challenge myself.
Option 1: Distracting the distraction
Much easier if I play movies & let the children watch it while I'm painting. But that's not the point. I don't want to create a virtual sphere with me inside & my family outside. And yet, children tend to get curious to the adult's activities, especially art & craft activities. I don't want to ignore their curiousity.
Option 2: Joining the distraction
I challenge myself by opening the door of my virtual sphere & let the children come inside & join me painting. We're painting in the living room, on a dinner table. We're sharing the paints & colors. The main distraction is coming from our 1,5 years old Neo. He really wants to join the fun with his sisters & dads. Sorry Neo, only milk & cookies for you this time. When you're a bit older, you can join the club!
It's fun actually. Though I need to give it a litte more time to get used to it. Of course, it depends on the project. The simple the better.
And this is different from what I did in the college, because being family man itself is a new art.
When the first time I saw Sherlock Holmes end title, I was like "This is the one what I've been looking for!" Well, I was looking for a style that combine live-action footage, painting & motion graphic & that end title inspires me.
So I decide to make a 'rip-off' style from it. I have no problem with the drawing itself, but the problem is in the ink-smearing motion effect.
Fortunately I found this website with tutorial & material about the same style, Jake & Dan. So I grab the paper texture file, the smearing ink blot etc from them.
Next step, I pick some of video footages from our Canon EOS 500D. Then in Corel Painter X, I draw the outline & put some hatches in different layers. I keep the original image from the video footage for color effect, later in After Effects.
Then in AfterEffects, using the smearing-ink material from -- as Luma Matte for each layer of my drawings & apply BCC Watercolor in the original image.
In the final composition, all the layers are in 3D mode because I want to add depth (3D environment) & put a camera with slow track movement.
Shot with Canon EOS 500D & 50mm ƒ1.4 lens with 4x macro filter. The video was shot with manual aperture (ƒ1.4) in FLAT Picture Style & color corrected in Final Cut Express with Magic Bullet Looks.
I don't like painting on iPhone with any painting apps. Feel awkward scrubbing my finger on its tiny screen. But then, I try this AutoDesk SketchBook (iTunes link) and it suits with my finger. Of course it takes time to get used to painting on iPhone with this app. But it's just.. well.. feel right. Here are some works from my iPhone.
